A Social App for In-Person Fun Wins Student Business Competition at Westminster College

Opportunity Quest 2018 winners for web

Feb 22, 2018

SALT LAKE CITY – Think the digital world is dividing us? Think again. Westminster student Brigham Jackson created an app to bring people together, in real life – not online. Jackson’s app is called Other Half. It encourages users to get off their phones and do stuff with other people by offering discounts to local businesses. The discount only works when friends are together in the same location. Jackson won first place and $5,000 with the Other Half app in Westminster’s Opportunity Quest competition.

Opportunity Quest is an annual business model competition designed to encourage students to venture into the world of entrepreneurship. Westminster's Center for Entrepreneurship hosted the annual competition on February 9, 2018. Participants work with a team of experienced entrepreneurial leaders who mentor them through the process of writing a formal executive summary and business plan.

Teams pitch their business models to a panel of judges made up of entrepreneurs and business leaders. The winning team automatically becomes a semifinalist in the Utah Entrepreneurial Challenge (UEC). The UEC is a statewide competition that awards over $100,000 in cash and in-kind services each year.
