Finding Articles

Articles contain the latest information available on a given topic. To locate articles for NURS 390, use the following Nursing Indexes/Databases accessible through the Library web pages. The databases may be searched remotely from home or office.

Be aware that publishers may place an embargo period on selected journals. This means that the database cannot publish the most recent articles from these journals. If the journal title is not available in our Journal Locator then you may request the full text via Interlibrary Loan.

To search databases use Keywords or Controlled Vocabulary.

Keywords:

  • Are words or phrases that identify important concepts of your topic
  • Are the simplest method of searching
  • Are useful when using new terms and/or jargon
  • Can be combined to narrow or expand results
  • Can be used to search several concepts at once

Controlled Vocabulary:

  • A list of terms created for specific article databses
  • Is also called subject headings; descriptors; or MESH terms (CINAHL)
  • Is listed in a thesaurus, index, subject headings, or CINAHL Headings
  • Retrieves the most focused information

Suggested Health Databases:

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature)
Provides indexing and abstracting for over 1,600 current nursing and allied health journals. Publications date back to 1982 and contain over 700,000 records.

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition
From the EBSCOhost: "Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition provides nearly 580 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Also featured are abstracts and indexing for over 615 journals. This database is updated on a daily basis."

Alt-HealthWatch from EBSCOhost
Alt-HealthWatch focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic, and integrated approaches to health care and wellness. It includes international perspectives.

MEDLINE from EBSCOhost

PubMed through NLM (National Library of Medicine)
