Westminster Freshmen Extend a “Helping Hand” to the Local Community
Hundreds of students, faculty and staff volunteer at more than a dozen community sites for “Helping Hands Day”
SALT LAKE CITY – As part of the college’s annual Helping Hands Day, the Westminster community will participate in more than a dozen service projects throughout Sugar House and Salt Lake City from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011.
From community gardens to a refugee welcome center, hundreds of Westminster freshmen, faculty and staff will take part in volunteer events that will help acquaint incoming students with their new campus and neighborhood, as well as our urban and natural environments.
Media members are invited to attend and cover various Helping Hands Day projects. Some of the more visually interesting projects include:

“Helping Hands Day is designed to introduce our new students to the educational values of community service, such as developing collaboration and leadership skills,” explains Julie Tille, director of Westminster’s Center for Civic Engagement. “One of Westminster’s college-wide learning goals is social responsibility – so we really try to instill in our students a sense that they can contribute to the well being of their community.
Helping Hands Day relies on partnerships with community organizations. Some of the organizations co-sponsoring projects include:

- No More Homeless Pets in Utah
- Neighborhood House
- Sprague Library
- Ten Thousand Villages
- Big Brothers Big Sisters

- American Lung Association in Utah
- Great Salt Lake Institute
