Westminster Student-Athlete Gives Blood, Blogs & Tours DC

During ‘09 Red Cross/NAIA Collegiate Leadership Program

SALT LAKE CITY– Westminster junior and volleyball player Katie McLintock is one of just 14 students from across the country participating in this year’s American Red Cross (ARC) and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Collegiate Leadership Program June 8 – 19, 2009, in Washington D.C. The program aims to inspire, motivate and create a new and diverse generation of Red Cross volunteers and leaders.

The leadership program kicks off with two weeks of energetic training at Red Cross National Headquarters located in Washington, D.C. During this event, student-athletes will learn from civic and business leaders how to uncover their leadership potential off the field. The participants will learn about organizing successful campus blood drives, actively participate on a leadership board, and take part in diversity and cultural competency training. For their efforts, students will receive scholarship support provided by the ARC and State Farm Insurance.

During the two-week program McLintock, who is also a business/marketing major, has been chronicling her Red Cross experiences on NAIA’s blog at http://naia.cstv.com/genrel/061109aac.html. The blog is aimed at developing leaders in and out of sports competition.

“We have realized that this program is not just about the business side of things, but more about becoming a better person,” said McLintock. “We are committed to life-long leadership and service….we have a lot to look forward to.”

In addition to blogging, McLintock has big plans when she comes back to school. She has already contacted Westminster’s President Michael Bassis to organize a “Come donate with the President” blood drive and has more in store for the campus.

“I will be trying new fun things to bring awareness to the blood drives that will motivate students to volunteer,” she explained. “I am in the process of building a strategic plan to bring the Red Cross on campus by coordinating four blood drives. I also would like to start an ARC club this year that would be involved with biometrics, humanitarian aid and preparedness.”

McLintock is originally from Cedar City, Utah and will be a junior at Westminster College this fall. She is also a Libero on the Griffins volleyball team. Westminster volleyball went 8-6 this past year in the Frontier Conference and will open 2009 play on August 21 against Biola (Calif.). The schedule lands McLintock and the Griffins in Hawaii in October 10 for non-conference competition. Off the court she is studying business/marketing and is the head coach for the High Country Volleyball Club. She has been named to the Dean’s List, is a mentor to Utah youth and is a tremendous representative of the 45,000 young men and women that compete under the NAIA umbrella.
